QUALITY ASSURANCE INSTRUCTIONS TO SUPPLIERS

QAIS NO:  Q5B-009F

SUBJECT:  SERIAL NUMBER IDENTIFICATION OF SUB-ASSEMBLIES/
   ASSEMBLIES/COMPONENTS OF RAYTHEON AIRCRAFT DESIGN

1   PURPOSE

1.1  This Instruction defines the responsibilities of qualified suppliers to Raytheon Aircraft (referred to as RA throughout this document), for compiling, allocating and recording of component serial numbers in order to facilitate the identification of individual sub-assemblies/components.

2  SCOPE

2.1 All serialised sub-assemblies/components of RA design, manufactured in fulfilment of RA orders.

2.2 Identification by serial number shall apply when any of the following conditions apply:-

a) The sub-assembly/assembly/component is the subject of inspection build history record.
b) The sub-assembly/assembly/component is a functioning part or contains functioning part(s) subject to periodic removal for overhaul or maintenance.
c) Individual serialisation of the sub-assembly/assembly/component is required in order to enable to maintenance of records.
d) The sub-assembly/assembly/component is required by drawing to be serialised (see QAIS No.Q5B-009B Control of Identifiable Parts).
e) The sub-assembly/assembly/component is required by the order to be serialised.

4  SERIAL NUMBER COMPOSITION

4.1  Serial numbers of sub-assembly/assembly/components manufactured by
 subcontractors to RA shall be composed in the following manner:-

 4.1.1  Suppliers Code Letters(s).

The supplier of a serialised sub-assembly/assembly/component is identified by code letter(s) incorporated into the serial number. The code letters shall be identical to those registered with RA as the code prefix used on suppliers inspection stamps eg. British Aerospace Chester - “DHB”.

 4.1.2  RA Originated Orders

Serial numbers of sub-assemblies/assemblies/components manufactured by a sub-contractor to RA orders will include code letter(s) indicating that RA is the unit responsible for placing the orders.

 4.1.3  Production Sequence Number

The serial number shall include a numerical suffix (production sequence number) which will indicate the order of manufacture of any serialised sub-assembly/assembly/component.

5  ALLOCATION OF SERIAL NUMBERS

5.1  RA Orders.

5.1.1  Where orders originate from RA, the ‘production sequence number’ of the serial number composition will be allocated by the Quality Manager, Raytheon Aircraft Quality Support Company on written request from the Supplier (unless pre-allocated on the order). The written request shall quote:-

 i)  RA Purchase Order number;
 ii)  Component description;
 iii)  Component part number;
 iv)  Quantity ordered;
 v)  Supplier’s authorised serial number code letters.

5.1.2 If a drawing number is changed due to modification action, the existing serial number shall remain allocated to the item.

5.1.3 If a serialised sub-assembly/assembly/component is scrapped, the serial number must be cancelled and under NO circumstances transferred to another sub-assembly/assembly/component. Additionally, the originating site sub-contract manager must be notified.

6  SUB-ASSEMBLIES/ASSEMBLIES/COMPONENTS ALLOCATED FOR  TEST  PURPOSES

6.1 When a sub-assembly/assembly/component is manufactured for test purposes the serial number shall include a letter X which will immediately precede the production sequence number, e.g.C.F.T.H./B/X.1234.
